What is Gum Disease and How Is It Treated?

Gum disease is a gum infection that causes your gums to become inflamed. It has three stages: gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis. When treating gum disease or performing gingivitis disease treatment, we focus on maintaining healthy gums through encouraging regular cleaning and oral hygiene and removing any unhealthy tissue. Periodontal disease treatment may also involve using antibiotics to fight infection, or surgically removing the infection if necessary.

Receding gums or gum recession can occur due to gum disease, a build up of excessive plaque, bruxism (grinding of the teeth), genetics, trauma, poor oral health, and aggressively and too frequently brushing or flossing your teeth.
